Lightning Protective Vents (LPVs) Testing Methods
- Visual Inspection: The initial step involves checking for physical damage, corrosion, or loose connections on the LPVs. Damaged components may compromise the vent's ability to conduct lightning safely.
- Electrical Resistance Measurement: A qualified technician uses a specialized ohmmeter to verify the grounding system resistance is within the acceptable range (usually less than 5 to 10 ohms), as high resistance can impede lightning current dissipation.
- Surge Simulation: Using a lightning surge generator to apply controlled electrical surges similar to lightning strikes. Monitoring equipment records how effectively the vents redirect and dissipate surges.
- Bonding Integrity Test: Periodic testing of connections between LPVs and other metallic building parts to confirm a continuous electrical path for lightning discharge.
